Inkscreen helps government and enterprise customers securely capture and manage content. CAPTOR has been called a “camera app on steroids wearing a bulletproof vest”, combining photo, video, and audio capture with full document scanning, encrypted containerized storage, and IT controls to manage how content is created, stored, and shared.

CAPTOR 3.5.1 - Stability, Security, SMB, and IT Admin Alerts

Josh Bohls

This week we released v3.5.1 of CAPTOR for all three publicly available iOS apps. Find them on Apple App Store here: https://apps.apple.com/us/developer/inkscreen/id660307680 Here are some release notes:

  • IT Admin Alerts: We are introducing a new system to alert our customers when their license is reaching an expiration date, or the limit on license user quantity has been reached. We will be contacting customers soon to allow them to “opt in” to the service. This allows a customer to be more aware of events associated with their CAPTOR software license. We will be introducing future updates to broaden the type of alerts we support, including potential user compliance violations. Our goal is to provide contextual awareness of how your employees are using the application and any possible policy violations (or attempted violations).

  • Encryption SDK Updates: For our MobileIron version, we have updated to AppConnect SDK v4.5.0.5. For BlackBerry Dynamics, we updated to SDK v6.2.0.234 and Launcher v2.10.2.238.

  • Audio Recording & Playback: We have completely replaced the library for audio recording and playback to improve the stability and longterm functionality of the audio components of CAPTOR. There is no new audio functionality in this version, but the change will allow us to be more responsive to customer requests and enhancements over time.

  • SMB: We also updated the SMB backup library. For most customers using SMB to backup CAPTOR content, this will be invisible. In early 2020 we will introduce support for SMB3 encryption and today’s update puts us on track to accomplish that important update.

  • Media Info: Some customers reported stability problems in CAPTOR v3.5.0 on iOS 13 devices when tapping the Media Info button. This issue has been resolved.

CAPTOR 3.5.0 - Watermark Policy

Josh Bohls

IMG_4504.jpg

We recently released an update to CAPTOR (v3.5.0) introducing a new watermark policy. This optional policy adds a semi-transparent string diagonally across photos and document pages. Some EMM systems allow for wildcard strings such as $USERID$ or $EMAIL$ which would print watermarks that are specific to the end user (jsmith or jsmith@inkx.cxm). You can add strings such as “Inkscreen Confidential” or “Do not Copy or Distribute” or whatever is relevant to your business. This policy will apply to all photos and documents shared via Open In, attached to an email, or backed-up to a server (manually or automated).

This change does not impact the Caption policy. You can still enable Captions to print on the lower border of photos. The watermark policy is intended to help protect you images as intellectual corporate property. Below is an example of something you may NOT want to protect however it displays the watermark feature. Enjoy!

CAPTOR 3.4.2 - iOS 13 Readiness & New Policy Options

Josh Bohls

This week marks the release of CAPTOR 3.4.2, just in time for iOS 13. Most of this release is under the hood and invisible to end users. For our MobileIron customers, there is an SDK update to v4.4.0.12. For BlackBerry Dynamics, we updated to SDK v6.1.0.170. Most of the work for this update involved compatibility testing for iOS 13.

For IT Admins managing CAPTOR, you now have two new policies to consider. As always, these are optional and the default behavior is “status quo” so there is no action required to maintain existing functionality and user capabilities. The two new policies are:

PromptLocation.jpg

Prompt for Location Services: Previous to this update when CAPTOR was first launched, the end user was prompted to allow or disallow location services, which applies a location to captured content in the form of a caption and inserted in the metadata. Based on privacy concerns and/or regulatory issues, some of our customers did not want to track and tag locations, so we implemented a policy to disable the prompt and turn off the location tagging completely within CAPTOR.

The configuration options include 1) prompting the user to decide whether to allow location services, or 2) disabling location services for the app entirely. There is not a third option of requiring location services to be enabled, as this would violate app store terms of service.

For MobileIron or VMware admins, the policy key is “allowlocation” with values “user” or “false”. For BlackBerry UEM admins, the policy appears in the Configuration tab of CAPTOR for BlackBerry’s app configuration with a dropdown menu.

FileExportMax.jpg

File Export Max Size: The second new policy is a limitation on the size of any file exported/shared from CAPTOR. This is primarily to improve the end user experience whenever there is an email attachment size limitation in place. Once configured, the app will inform the user if the file is too large and provide some guidance on how to make it smaller (change the contents of the file or adjust the quality setting). If this setting applies to your organization, we recommend setting this policy with the same value as your email attachment size limit.

For MobileIron or VMware admins, the policy key is “filesizelimit” with numerical value of 1-30 (representing the size in MB). For BlackBerry UEM admins, the policy appears in the Configuration tab of CAPTOR for BlackBerry’s app configuration with box to enter your numerical value (1-30). The default value is “unlimited”.

Please note, this policy only applies to content shared manually. CAPTOR Backup protocols will still function as normal without any size restriction.
