CAPTOR 3.4.0 - Updates to Backup Service & File Management

Josh Bohls

This week marks the release of CAPTOR 3.4.0. Here are some highlights:

  • New folder and file management options. The goal here was to modernize and standardize how a user interacts with folders and files within the app. We incorporated some natural gestures, such as swiping left on a folder to reveal options to edit the folder name, share the contents of the folder, delete the folder, or backup the contents of the folder (if enabled). Within a folder you can switch between three different viewing modes (small thumbnails, large thumbnails, and list view). Within the list view, you can swipe left on a file to reveal options to delete, edit, share, or add to favorites. We added a Sort button to order files by name, type, or capture date. Finally, we added a Select button - tap Select and then highlight one or more files to reveal options to move, share, or delete.

  • “Favorite” files. We added a new default folder named Favorites. To add a file, go to the folder it’s in and toggle to list view. Swipe left on the file and tap Favorite. The file will remain in the original folder, but also be represented in the Favorites folder. The benefit is to provide the ability to find files quicker, but this also allows you to share files that are in different folders as one attachment.

  • SFTP SSH2/RSA Key support. Customers using the SFTP data transfer protocol to backup files from the CAPTOR app can now utilize SSH2/RSA keys to authenticate. Most implementations using SSH2 Keys will require the end user to copy and paste the key into the CAPTOR app (Settings>Backup Config>SFTP>SSH Keys). The additional required settings (host, port, path..) can be set within Core.

  • Microsoft OneDrive backup option. We now support backup from CAPTOR to Microsoft OneDrive. If this option is enabled, the user will need to go to Settings>Backup Config>OneDrive, verify the path and then tap Authorize. This will launch a webview with instructions to enter a username and password to connect the CAPTOR app with your OneDrive account.

We hope you enjoy these powerful new features. Please share feedback and report any issues by emailing support@inkscreen.com. Cheers! Josh

Improvements to backup service, error handling, and logging

Josh Bohls

This information applies to CAPTOR for MobileIron 3.3.1, CAPTOR for Enterprise 3.3.1, and CAPTOR for BlackBerry 3.3.2.

Log Files: We have added error codes and more definition to the log files without exposing any sensitive information. We also added a new method to share log files using the Open In protocol so you can now attach to Email+ or Docs@Work or any other secure app approved by IT policy that can accept a text file.

Test Configuration Button: We created a way for you to test the backup configuration settings from within CAPTOR. Go to Settings>Backup Config> (choose the protocol you are using). Tap the Test button to validate your settings. If the system detects a problem you will be presented with an error message and code. If your backup system is configured to run Manually, you will see the same error message and code when attempting to run an actual backup (found in the Folder view).

If you need any assistance setting up the CAPTOR backup service, please send an email to support@inkscreen.com.

CAPTOR 3.3.0 - Secure Content Copy Backup Service

Josh Bohls

CAPTOR 3.3.x represents the most substantial functional app update in almost two years and satisfies the feature most requested by our customers and reseller partners - a secure centralized backup option.

What is Secure Content Copy?

backup_progress.jpg

Secure Content Copy is a backup service enabling an organization to have photos, videos, scanned documents, and audio recording (ie CAPTOR content) copied and transferred from employee mobile devices to a centralized on-premise content server or network drive. The service utilizes common data transfer protocols - initially SMB2, WebDAV, and SFTP - and is fully managed and controlled within your EMM console (ex. MobileIron Core, BlackBerry UEM, VMware Workspace One). The service can be automated or set up to allow the employee to backup content on demand.

Why is this important?

There are two primary reasons why this service may be beneficial to your organization. First, it provides you a simple and secure method of backing up corporate data that previously existed only on the employee’s mobile device. If an employee’s device was lost or stolen, the content could be wiped/deleted, but it could not be recovered.

Secondly, your company may have a workflow or use case requiring the captured content to be made available to other departments or employees. For example, a police department would benefit from having photos and videos automatically copied to a central server and made available to evidence processors and investigators.

Who is responsible for setting up and managing the service?

This backup service is completely optional and is disabled by default, requiring the organization’s IT Admin to enable it by policy. I would recommend first reviewing the current configuration guide for your EMM platform. You will need to establish the content server on your network first. Once you determine the best data transfer protocol (SMB2, SFTP, or WebDAV), you will then set up the policies in your EMM console. We strongly recommend setting up tunneling/VPN to encrypt the data in transit.

When will the service be available?

We are releasing the MobileIron version the week of December 17, 2018, and BlackBerry and VMware/AirWatch in February 2019.

Where can I get more information?
