CAPTOR + Microsoft OneDrive Improvements

Josh Bohls

Over the last two weeks we have rolled out app updates to all CAPTOR targets on both iOS and Android to improve how we handle OneDrive® backups. If your CAPTOR deployment involves a connection to Microsoft OneDrive®, please review these changes and check your configuration for compliance.

This articles pertains to CAPTOR (iOS) v4.1.6 and CAPTOR (Android) v2.1.6.

Previous versions of CAPTOR required the OneDrive Path (folder) to exist in the user’s OneDrive account prior to the first CAPTOR backup attempt. Identifying the correct value for “OneDrive Path” was challenging or some business deployments of OneDrive.

The updates released this week introduce support for OneDrive Path key values of a / (slash) or empty (no value). When configured this way, the user will see the CAPTOR folders (Captured, Imported, etc) written to the root of their OneDrive account.

Below is an example CAPTOR app configuration with a OneDrive Path value of “/”. If this key is not part of your app configuration, then the default value is empty (no value) and the backup should still be successful.

Changes to the OneDrive Path will often break the user’s connection to OneDrive. In these situations, it may be necessary for the app user to go into the CAPTOR settings>Backup Config>OneDrive and tap “Reset Authorization”. This will reset the connection between CAPTOR and OneDrive to the new path (folder).

To recap, CAPTOR supports OneDrive Path app configuration values that consist of only a / or to be unconfigured (empty). When configured this way, the app user will see CAPTOR folders added to the root of their OneDrive account, as seen in this screenshot.

CAPTOR (iOS) 5.0 Release Notes

Josh Bohls

CAPTOR 5.0 planned release for all iOS targets (BlackBerry Dynamics, MobileIron/Ivanti AppConnect, Microsoft InTune, and AppConfig) is early October 2023. This release represents the largest redesign in the user experience since 2017. Here are some highlights:

  • Home screen elimination. The CAPTOR home screen, which has been part of the app for ten years, is gone. The app now opens directly to the camera or the capture mode of choice (see Default Capture Mode).

  • New segmented controller menu to switch between capture modes and folders. Switching between capture modes (camera, video recorder, audio recorder, and document scanner) is now done using a new menu bar at the bottom of the screen.

  • Default Capture Mode. At first launch you will be asked to select a default capture mode (photo, doc, video, or audio). The option you select will then be the first screen you see when opening the application. You can switch this selection in the Settings menu. This may be set by app configuration policy.

  • Disable Capture Mode(s). In Settings you will have options to disable capture modes that you do not use. When you restart the app you will see any disabled modes removed from the main menu bar. These can be locked by app configuration policy as well.

  • Document Info Screen. Documents now have an Info screen just like all other media formats. Open a document and tap the “i” button to reveal capture date and other metadata.

  • Pause audio recording when CAPTOR not in focus. If an audio recording is interrupted by for example an incoming phone call, the recording will pause until you go back to CAPTOR to resume recording. The recording is reset if you have to re-authenticate.

  • Auto and Manual Exposure (photos and videos). When taking a photo or recording video in low or high light environments the app will now automatically adjust the exposure settings. For devices or cameras that do not support auto-exposure there will be a new button to manually control the exposure.

  • Video capture at 60 FPS. CAPTOR now supports up to 60 frames-per-second video capture. Some older devices still max out at 30 FPS.

  • Improvements to Import process. We have improved the speed and stability of the file import process.

  • QR Code reader incorporated in Photo Capture Mode. We have integrated the QR Code reader into photo capture mode. If the app detects a QR Code in the photo preview, an alert will appear asking if you want to open or copy the link. We now support QR Codes that reveal text strings as well.
